Clockwork is a Sydney 38, one of the most established one-design racing classes on the Australian offshore circuit. Designed by Iain Murray, Ian Burns and Andy Dovell and built by Sydney Yachts, the class was conceived as a fixed, no-compromise package — every boat identically built and rigged — so results come down to crew work rather than the chequebook. Launched in 2001 and measuring 11.74 m LOA on a 2.65 m bulb keel, with a fractional aluminium rig and a non-overlapping headsail, she’s a boat built to be sailed hard, and equally capable turning heads at a club twilight or grinding through an offshore blow.
Co-owned and co-skippered by Andrew Lloyd and Mary Ann Harvey, Clockwork races out of the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia in Adelaide, easy to spot on the water thanks to her distinctive oversized orange steering wheel. Andrew brings decades of competitive sailing experience across helming, tactics, trimming, navigation and boat maintenance, while Mary Ann came to keelboats later in life after twenty-plus years sailboarding, and has since been recognised as crew member of the year at her home club. Since taking on the boat, the pair have built a rotating crew and turned Clockwork into one of the busiest offshore campaigns in South Australian sailing.
It’s a genuinely heavy-mileage program. In 2024 alone, Clockwork covered more than 10,000 nautical miles across 11 major races and events around the country — a schedule that spans local South Australian regattas like the South Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta, Port Lincoln Race Week and the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Regatta, through to the full run of interstate offshore classics: the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast, Gold Coast to Mackay, Airlie Beach Race Week, Hamilton Island Race Week, Magnetic Island Race Week, Festival of Sails and the Rolex Sydney to Hobart. Few Sydney 38s, or boats of any size, cover that much ground in a single season.
The results have followed the miles. Clockwork was the only South Australian entry in the 2023 Rolex Sydney to Hobart, and backed that up in 2024 by taking out the Sydney 38 Division outright — a title the crew returned to defend in 2025 and again in 2026, stringing together three consecutive Hobart finishes in fleets where plenty of boats don’t see the finish line at all. Alongside the racing, the campaign carries a cause: Clockwork sails in support of Orange Sky, the Australian charity providing free mobile laundry and shower services to people experiencing homelessness, with the crew using the boat’s reach around the coast to help raise awareness and funds.
It’s a program built on volume as much as talent — a crew that shows up to nearly every major regatta on the east and south coasts, racks up the miles, and keeps finding podiums along the way.
