A key highlight of this passage was the extensive time I spent helming in demanding conditions—upwind, at night, and in confused seas. Ian also took me through his navigation station, explaining his routing strategies, software tools, and decision-making processes. This hands-on lesson in advanced navigation proved invaluable and directly informed my role as navigator during the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, where I applied many of the techniques I had learned aboard Wings.

The conditions ultimately dictated a two-day stopover in Mooloolaba to avoid deteriorating weather, reinforcing the importance of patience and sound judgement offshore. We also made a brief three-hour stop at Lady Musgrave Island, providing a welcome pause in otherwise relentless conditions and a rare opportunity to swim with turtles before resuming the passage south.

Sailing Wings in these conditions over such a long offshore distance significantly strengthened my understanding of upwind helming, watch management, decision-making under pressure, and offshore navigation. The combination of a performance-oriented yacht, sustained heavy conditions, and direct guidance from Ian Edwards made this passage an exceptional learning experience and a defining moment in my offshore sailing development.
