Jeanneau Sun fast 3300
It’s great to be back on the water for another Sail Peninsula Regatta, a highlight of the season at Safety Beach Sailing Club. This event always brings a fantastic atmosphere to the peninsula, and it served as the perfect backdrop for another stint aboard Unprecedented.
Owned by Andy McGrath, Unprecedented is a Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300 that stands out even in a competitive fleet. Having spent time on her previously, returning to the boat offered another chance to get a feel for how this modern, purpose-built offshore racer handles the varied conditions of Port Phillip.
A Different Breed of Yacht
The Sun Fast 3300 is a significant departure from the more traditional yachts I often find myself on. It is a platform clearly optimised for efficiency and speed over comfort. Some of the key characteristics that define the experience include:
Responsiveness: Being much lighter than a standard cruiser-racer, she reacts instantly to trim changes and shifts in weight.
Technical Rigging: Utilising running backstays and a highly loaded rig adds a layer of complexity that you don’t find on more “forgiving” setups.
Purpose-Built Design: Everything on the boat is geared toward short-handed offshore performance, requiring a high level of coordination to keep her at peak potential.
Sailing on a boat like this is always a refreshing change of pace. It requires a bit more focus and a more proactive approach to sail handling, but the payoff is a much more tactile and engaging experience on the water.

Hot Chipps
Club racing on Port Phillip Bay provided the perfect introduction to the Dehler 46 platform. Spending time on this versatile yacht was great preparation for a later coastal delivery, offering hands-on experience with its systems and deck layout. Assisting with a new mainsail setup also gave me a more technical look at the boat’s performance beyond just pulling ropes during a race.
Arcadia
Sailing on this Archambault 40RC across club and ORCV races has been a masterclass in team efficiency. PJ and the crew operate with a calm, quiet precision that makes even complex sail changes look routine. It’s a great environment to observe how a cohesive team relies on clear roles and consistent repetition rather than noise to maintain performance under pressure.
Adams 10.6
Sailing aboard Cloud 10, an Adams 10.6, provided a classic club racing experience out of RMYS. This 35-foot Australian design is a staple of the local fleet, known for its one-design competition. Getting time on this platform was a practical way to broaden my experience across a different style of local yacht.

It was a practical way to experience how modern layouts handle different club environments and varied racing formats.
